I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee sport. There is a problem with my tail lights as well as the dash lights.
The switch to turn the lights on isn't working correctly. If I mess with it for a few minutes, I can get both the tail lights and dash lights to come on, but then as soon as I put on the headlights, the others go out.
I've checked the fuses and they all seem okay. Has anyone else had this problem before? I can't afford to take this to a mechanic, so I was hoping to fix it myself. (Or get a friend to do it for me.)
Any help out there?

try cleaning your switch as suggested, But on that model your fuse for your dash lights is the same your brake lights.

Might want to try jiggling that around one your fuse block as they are a piss poor design, and you may just be loosing an electrical connection.

Take both tail light fixtures out & turn on the light fixtures. If the fuse holds, placed between the light fixtures in. If it blows the fuse, then commence with the socket & examine the wiring decrease back. If it light fixtures ok, placed the different tail gentle in & proceed an identical.

It might be the switch its self. I would pull it out and make sure all the contacts are clean. Maybe go down to the local Junk yard and look for the same XJ and pull and old one and swap them out. probably cost you like $5 or less.

One possibility could be a bad ground or a crack in a power wire.
