He woke up this morning with a tempurature of 102.8, then it went down to 100.0. Now it is back up to 102.0. I have been giving him Motrin, but he is so hot. And I have been putting cool compresses on his head and Be Kool strips. What else can I do to make him feel more comfortable? He has no other symptoms just fever.

just do what you can until the roads are clear to help keep his temp down. what you are doing sounds just fine to me. don't pay any attention to the way people respond on here. some people are just idiots. it is not like you are neglecting the child or anything so there is no need to downgrade you. you sound like a great mom. just give him plenty of sleep and rest and continue to do what you are doing. when the roads do clear up, i would take him to the doctor just to be on the safe side. it is probably just some kind of cold but one can never be too sure anymore. hope he feels better. hope this helps. good luck.

First of all, are you giving him enough Motrin? I'm not insinuating that you don't know how to read directions. I have under medicated my children myself. Motrin is my first choice when dealing with a fever. It should be taking it down to at least 99 degrees. It should also last a minimum of 4 hours. Also, you can alternate between Motrin and Tylenol every two hours to control a high fever. But, don't take my advice, call the doc and see if this is ok first. Sometimes, when the fever does not go away after numerous doses of medication, it could mean something bacterial is going on instead of viral. Could be the start of an ear infection, strep throat, etc. See if you can get him in to the doc. The flu is going around also. Do your best to keep him hydrated to avoid dehydration. Sometimes a bath or shower can help. Normal temp of course. Hot tea that has been cooled down a little. Popsicles, jello, soup, etc. Bed is where he needs to be. Or make him one on the couch in front of the tv. I hope your little boy gets better soon. I worry so much when my kids get sick also.

Most importantly make sure he stays hydrated. Allow him to eat Popsicles and jello, and sip clear liquids like water, or broth. Also, giving him a bath. I was told by my ER to start out with a comfortably warm bath, then gradually add cool water making sure to get all areas of the body wet, especially places that hold heat like under the arms. back of neck and groin. But again do not make it freezing. Dress lightly and cover with a light blanket or sheet. You can piggyback Motrin and Tylenol, but only if you have gotten approval from your doctor. Again keeping hydrated is the Key. No tears when crying, Skin losing elasticity, and decrease in Urinating should be taken seriously and medical help attained. The fever may go up and down, but if it does not respond at all to medication or the other methods above, then he should see a doctor. Hope he is feeling better soon.

Believe it or not, a fever is your friend. After the motrin or whatever you give him wears off, let the fever run for a little while before giving him another doseage. What's happening is some kind of "bug" got into your son's system and his body is trying to get rid of it. The way the body does that is through a fever. If you are constantly trying to keep the fever down, his body takes twice as long to get rid of the bug. If his fever stays that high for several days, then you can take him in to make sure he's ok. Otherwise, just let the fever run its course. The cold compresses, and the motrin are fine, and make sure you have him drink plenty of water to keep from getting dehydrated.

You can alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours. A lukewarm bath would probably be good. What you don't want is to get him shivering. Shivering raises the body temperature very quickly so no ice, cold baths etc.

However, your son's temperature isn't extreme. My doctor told me that children can tolerate temperatures up to 107F without getting brain damage. I can usually only stay calm up to 103F, then I start pulling out the Motrin. Sounds like you're doing a good job. A gentle massage may help with some of the achiness.

What I do for my daughter is, popsicles and a lukewarm bath. The doctor and Emergency room told me to alternate with motrin and children's tylenol. Give tylenol one time then next motrin. It will kick the fever quickly. My daughter runs these (phantom) fevers since she was a baby.

mostly everyone who answered is right, I say mostly because of the first stupid answer. Even if you could get the the ER they won't do anything but give him motrin and you are already doing that. Maybe some popsickles if you have them. I know you are stuck, my sister has been stuck for 2 days in that storm.
