Ali taunted and punished Ernie Terrell by punching him and ask him "What's my name" throughout the fight never going for the finish so he could inflict more punishment. He also done something very similar to Floyd Patterson who he could have knocked out sooner. Patterson was a class fighter and a good man and I really hated that he done that to Floyd Patterson. No I didn't think it was right and downright classless of him that fight because of his anger at Patterson. Yeah he had moments where he could be cruel.

I don't know if I would call that cruel. Ali knew how the game was played before the PPV tv people did. He knew that he could knock out some of those guys in the 1st round, but he wanted to put on a show for everyone who paid to see a fight.
People hate putting down $500 - $1000 for a seat at a heavyweight fight only for it to last less than a round. Ali was just giving the people their money's worth.

Ali states that he never tried to hurt any of his opponents. This seems funny that a boxer would be like this but if you think about it Ali didn't really scare any of his opponents like Foreman and Tyson did. As far as Ali being cruel you are right he could have knocked people out alot sooner than what he did he just chose not to. I can name a few of them----Patterson-Ali took him through too many rounds that were not necessary. Ali also punished Terrell and let Foreman go 3-4 more rounds when he could have ended the fight earlier. Terrell and Patterson would not call him Muhammad Ali they kept referring to him as Clay. Ali punished them for it.

Yes, against Ernie Terrell. He beat this guy for 15 rounds because Ernie would not call him Ali. Ali could have knock Terrell out any time he wanted but wanted to make him pay for his disrespect. He did the same to Floyd Patterson as well.

Ali was and still is the greatist did you not know that in boxing they want to keep the fight going as long as they can. The longer they go the more money they will make. Who wants to watch a fight that will last only 10 min. And pay.

I don't know if a boxer could do that. An exhausted boxer hitting a man so that they are just about to pass out? sounds fishy.

That would intimidate his next opponent. That's one reason he is the best there ever was. That was also before heavyweight boxing was comparable to wwe.

In boxing, the name of the game is destroy the opponent. It's a barbaric sport, so I don't think it is possible to differentiate "gentle" boxing from "violent" boxing. It's all violent.
