They aren't. Do some research and try to understand what lead to the French capitulation in WWII. Let me help you. Here's the juice, the French saw their young men slaughtered in the trenches of WWI. This slaughter reached such insanse proportions that the French Army nearly mutinied against their leadership for their complete banal handling of the conflict.
This slaughter was very fresh in the minds of the French, when Hitler's panzers came slashing across the nation. And in the blink of an eye the German Blitzkrieg brought a military end to the conflict.
The French were thinking, OK, the Boche get their payback for Versailles, we'll lose Alsace-Lorraine and they'll go home. Only this time the Germans didn't go home, so instead of a negotiated treaty, the Nazis come in and decide to stay, which had to be a shock not only to Frenchmen but to more than few Germans as well.
We do the French a huge disservice by measuring their martial spirit based on the events of the Second World War. And we should never forget that the French resistance and the Free French fought on until the end of the war.
If you need any proof of French martial prowess do some research on the battles around Bir Hachiem, where the French held out against the best Rommel could throw at them.

They really arent..........In WW2 they were only occupied because ( like now) people in this country (america) didnt want to be part of a European war....what allot of people seem to forget is that if it werent for the brave french resistance fighters D-Day would have been ALLOT harder for the allies because they took out a LARGE ammunition depot. I shouldnt have to mention that even though we fought against them in the French & Indian war, not long after they came to the aid of the same people they were at war with and helped us defeat the Brittish. The French (for the most part) are a great people, they arent cowards, they would just rather not have to go to war again, immagine what france went through in ww1 & ww2. Those battles were in THEIR streets, THEIR schoolyards, THEIR playgrounds, not in some far off land where the only thing civilians see is in the paper or on the news. Don't get me wrong, I am a Republican, & a STRONG supporter of Bush, but I also have the courtesy to respect the choices of the nation that helped grant me the freedom to have a choice in which political leader I support.

French surrendered in WWII, because they did not repeat same thing, have you ever whent to their graves from WWI, well i know you havent, because you are makeing fun of them, it goes freakin miles and miles long of crosses, most of them named unknown. now, imagine that and is your father or grandfather. if you were son of those guys and still suffering from that at the time, they will not watn to fight, if just giving the land would save the life they would do that, but they still hated the gerrys, so dont forget that. now women if you lived at the time most of you will be single, if 100 of women was there only one would be married, and that sounds good right guys, but not really cuz you wount have leg or two, may be blinded or something too from stress.
now, french officially did surrender, but they had la resistance, un unofficial army of citizens, and they did fight with allies.
