It's not when he is sleeping. It's almost like he is being startled.

Something is definitely wrong. There are several possibilities. It could be that he may have gotten into something toxic, he could be having some type of seizure or he may be in pain. But he definitely needs to see a vet.

Ok, it's time for a trip to the Vet and a blood test for your friend...don't wait too long...at least he'll get the treatment he needs or, at least you'll have piece of mind knowing nothing is wrong.
Call the Vet first thing in the morning and tell them the symptoms...
they'll let you know if it requires an emergency visit or not.
Your best friend depends on you to make sure he stays healthy.

Yeah I'm sorry but could it possibly be that he is being startled? What else symptoms do you notice besides that? If none than make sure you observe him for any change like for a week or so. Other than that there might be something wrong and you need to go to the vet.

I agree with Mamby. Without any other info - it's impossible to figure out these things without seeing what's going on. Best to get to your vet as soon as you can.

bro im sorry, but it seems ur dog has distemper, which could be compared to aIDS, its like a neurological disease very hard to cure, lots of money, go test for distemper now, also symptoms include, teary eyes, dry paws, shaking, discharge from nose, my puppy has distemper, but were fighting it! make sure u be very loving to ur dog so his will to live is great!

it sounds like petitmal seizures take him to the vet he may need medication to stop them.
