Primarily age statement. Glenlivet is 12 years old (although there are older age statement bottlings), whereas nowadays I think Glenfiddich is 8 years old.
Also the distillation and how much peat they use in firing ; the mineral content of the water; the barrels' ages; weather and storage conditions.
Also although as somebody pointed out Glenfiddich is the largest selling single malt Scotch Whisky, this is not entirely due to taste, but the shape of the bottle.
Overall the taste of Glenfiddich for many years has been aimed primarily at the Asian market, and it is a formula that has served them well, nowadays they SEEM to be focussing more on the home market. Glenlivet has stayed the same.
They are both Speyside, but the whisky trail through this area offers many differing varieties and tastes. My favourites for the area are:
Glendronach Glenfarclas Longmorn & Macallan.
they tend to represnt the sweeter side of the Spey region bu enjoy

Glenlivet is indeed lighter than Glenfiddich. I like another poster's reference to a lemony note in the former. Glenfiddich is more like brandy in a way. The poster who warns not to use these high quality single malts in mixed drinks is correct. Why waste?

They are both Speyside single-malt scotches. Glenfiddich is the best selling single malt in the world and is the only single malt made in a single distillery from a single source of water. However, Glenlivet (owned by Seagrams) is the best seller in the US.
I would agree with one of the answers that commented, Glenfiddich has a darker, smokier flavor and Glenlivet is lighter and less bold. However, I would not recommend mixing either of them - use a less expensive blended scotch if you want to mix cocktails.

This is only my opinion Glenlivit is lighter with an almost lemony flavor, or an upnote. Glenfiddich is heavier, smokier. Glenlivit is a better mixer. Why? I don't know, could be a number of reasons, the barrels, the amount of sugar etc.

i prefer the glenlivet over glenfiddich, as i find it lighter, smoother and more complex in flavour. glenfiddich is heavier and peatier, if you like that.

It is good to see a person's enjoyment of fine scotch begin. Most of the answers above are correct. And as for mixing a fine single malt, just don't do it. I wouldn't even put ice in it.
Find a nice "scotch bar" and try some of the finer single malts out there. They may be expensive but nothing beats a good scotch.

So what is your question Jamie? You sound a touch pretentious to me. But I'lll favour you with my opinion. Old Pulteney is ok for me. Touch sweet and a definite salty tang.
