If you know the guy personally, you could talk to him, let him know how he hurt your girlfriends feelings and ask him not to do it again. If the situation gets out of hand, walk away - you did what you were suppose to do, said what was needed to be said. End of discussion. Go and reassure your girlfriend, if necessary apologize to your girlfriend for his behavior.

( i dont have a gf cuz i'm a chick but....) depending on what he said. if it was a nasty personal attack he made on her, i'd be mega pissed, so would probably ask him why he said it (to get both sides of the story) and tell him to never do it again.
