The Scriptures helped to provide sound guidance for God’s worshipers. When Joshua was entrusted with the responsibility of leading Israel, he was told: “This book of the law [which had been recorded by Moses] should not depart from your mouth, and you must in an undertone read in it day and night, in order that you may take care to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way successful and then you will act wisely.” Note that God did not promise Joshua some miraculous infusion of wisdom. Rather, if Joshua read and meditated on the “book of the law,” then he would act wisely.

The same thing holds true today, if you read and meditate on God's Word, then you will not act stupid as others do, but you would act wisely.

Its a sin versus a virtue.

Gluttony: "Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth"

Prudence: "be careful to do everything written in it"
