Plate boundaries are earthquake zones. So everything built near a fault is more likely to be damaged by earthquakes. This can affect the economy by forcing cities to rebuild. When there are injuries, there will be healthcare costs associated with living near a plate boundary. The December 26th Tsunami is another example of how being near a plate boundary can affect the economy. The economy was basically wiped off the face of the earth in that one.

Hope you are talking about tectonic plates...

I've now lived 11 years very close to the plates, and must say that they have nothing to do with economy. Consider Taiwan, with a robust booming economy. Then look at Philippines which is trying to economically destroy itself. both countries are right on the Tectonic plates and have frequent earthquakes. Hope this helps.
