Yes, some guys are shy about it. They are afraid they are going to disrespect you.

Guys dont usually ask, Neither do women. Sex is usually a go with the flow sort of thing. And If You aren't ready or you dont want to do it , then u dont. Sex is a natural thing, and if its going to happen it should be because there is a passion, a hottness between two people. I think asking would make it kinda impersonal like a hooker with a john.

It could be shyness or respect for your feelings. He might just be taking it slow. If he's a virgin, then it's probably shyness. If not, maybe he's just being a really good guy. Most guys with a little experience are not shy when it comes to that, so it could be either a sign of his inexperience or that he's just a considerate person taking it slow.

I dated a girl for two years and we didn't have sex because she was REALLY religious. Great girl. Smart, funny, intelligent and loved to get wasted at the bars. Outside the sex thing, perfect woman. I basically started to lose phsyical attraction with her because we didn't have sex. Hindsight, I wish I made my feelings known to her and found out what would happened if I told her. If she would have agreed to have sex, I would have ended up marrying her. Point of this story: sex is an important aspect of a relationship. If it is that important to you that you are asking the question on yahoo, it means it's very important to you. So discuss this with her.

I'd imagine that every man would be shy about using the term "intercourse", if that's helpful. :P

Of course. He probably doesn't want to push her into something she doesn't want causing her to get scared and run off. If he takes it slow, she'll let him know when the time is right. And if he doesn't pick on up on the subtle signals, she should turn up the heat. He'll get the message.

Yeah! If my girl's a virgin I would totally be freaking out about how to ask her....and besides if she's a virgin...I would hope that I could feel her out to the point that when I ask it wouldn't be that uncomfortable...

Yes, the first time can be kind of embarrassing. Just ask her is she is ready. Don't push and pressure her if she isn't.
