II am at a loss. I had a lump come up on my neck, where my thyroid is, and I went to the doc and she checked my TSH levels and said my samples were off the charts and sent me to an endocrinologist. He diagnosed me with Hashimingos Disease (sp) and put me on thyroid meds. The lumps on my neck are nodules and a biopsy showed no cancer. I recently moved and had to find a new doc. he checked my thyroid and said my thyroid was not bad, just a little slow but not enough to be on synthyroid. I don’t understand? I had previous doctors tell me that I had hypothyroidism and other docs tell me I didn’t. Can thyroid levels fluctuate? If so, often?

The TSH changes throughout the day and that's why its a poor test for thyroid. It took me years to get diagnosed because of this stupid test. If you have it done, it should always be in the morning though I suggest a Free T4 and Free T3 be done along with it.

Most likely the nodules shrunk because you were on thyroid meds. It's probably not a good idea to go off of them. While you may need a lower dose, you probably should remain on them so the nodules don't get bigger again. Dos your new doctor know you are alreay on thyroid meds? If so, he/she cannot say you don't need them unless you tested after not taking them for a couple of months. You may need to find a new doctor or have your old doctor tell the new doctor how important it is you remain on the meds.

Below are a few thyroid links. Read up on it and also get copies of your blood work. It's real important to know where you feel best. The more you know, the better care you will get. For most that's with a morning TSH around 1.0

Yes, thyroid levels will fluctuate but will not get normal when you have hashimotos without meds. Hashimotos causes your bodies antibodies to attack your thyroid. That doesn't just go away. Dump your new Dr. and find someone with a clue.

If your first doctor medicated you, your second doctor is seeing the results of your medication, right? I certainly hope the results of your medication make your thyroid "not bad."
