Muscles - they get knots called trigger points, which keep them tight, which press on nerves. For full information and how to help yourself read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.
Popping is almost always muscles and you would probably have gone to the hospital to find out if you broke a bone if it were the tendons or ligaments in stead (they are that painful).
Natural muscle relaxers because they contain magnesium and potassium are bananas and molasses (too much can cause the runs)

I have that same problem, it is really scary sometimes, but I just tell myself that it is gas and that I am fine. I dont breathe really fast though, I usually hold my breath, or breathe very lightly. It seems that whenever I get these pains I end up having alot of gas.

Could be, but chest pains could also be a sign of something more than just gas. Why don't you visit the doc or hospital, and make sure it's just gas.

There is a mild condition called costochondritis..it's a inflammation of the rib cage.
It can be very painful and scary. Please talk to your doctor before self-medicating for any type of chest pain.

It could be related to your rib-cage, too.
Consult with a chiropractor - specialized in spinal manipulation.

it could be that you have to much stress in your life... if you find that you do you need to learn to take time away from everything and just meditate... just close your eyes and take deep breath when the pains happens... if that doesn't work drink something cold that works for me...
