Our poodle died of renal failure and the breeder said it was a bad breeding and shouldn't happen again. We have 3 kids aged 4 and up. We can drive 3 hours each way for the replacement poodle, or 45 minutes for a 1/2 lab 1/4 border collie, 1/4 aussie from Craig's list. Or there is a 2 year old lab in Uncle Henry's. We just want a healthy dog and a good playmate and walking companion. Our poodle didn't play with the kids-I don't know whether it was because she was 10 months old when we got her, or because she was sick (She died 8 months later) or whether poodles are normally aloof with children.

Get the Lab/BC/Aussie mix. I have a Border Collie/Aussie and she is wonderful. Smart, loyal and loves children. My wife and I don't have kids but many of our friends do and she is great with them. Completely gentle even when they are tugging on her. If she doesn't like it she walks away from them. And I had a Lab when I was younger and that is still one of my favorite dogs to this day.

What size poodle was it? While toy poodles are generally more aloof with children, standard poodles are known for being fairly playful. It just depends on the individual dog's personality.

If these are your three options, you'll really want to know as much as you can about each. As a family dog, you are looking for a middle-of-the-road friendly dog that won't try to dominate anyone or be too aloof for playing. I personally would recommend checking out the mutt from Craig's list just to see what he's like. Does he get along with the kids? Is he playful? Does he show signs of submission when any member of the family pets him (look for ears back, tail wagging, and licking)? Ask the current owners of the mutt for a detailed description of his personality. You don't want him if he has any aggressive traits whatsoever.

Go with the mix. Having a mixed breed dog in general means the chances of sickness and health issues are so rare since the breed lines have been broken. And why would you want to risk the chance of another poodle problem? Anyways, good luck

I would go for the Labrador. They're a better companion and playmate. I have 2 of them and 1 is a chocolate breed.

border collies and aussies are great dogs. Smart and good with kids in my experience.

Given the choices you listed, I'd have to say the lab/bordercollie/aussie.

My suggestion would be to get a female whatever you get. They make the best pets with kids......no matter what breed.

Poodles are generally playful, and very smart. Maybe she was already sick, and you didn't realize it.
But the other dogs sound good too.
Me, I like poodles.
