Its simple, set up your TCP to keep traffic moving slow, so you can keep an eye on the approaching vehicle, use an overwatch with a 50cal trained on each vehicle. The first guard is backed up by 2 other levels of security, and always approach from the driver side, weapon at the ready and move slowly. Make them exit the vehicle and sit on the side of the road while you search the vehicle, and always have a gun on them.
To the guy who said don't be a soldier, go live somewhere else if you are american. If your not, than don't be an insurgent any longer and live a life not wanting to kill infidels.

As an infantryman serving in Iraq. We never get to do checkpoints. But in training, we would use a terp and a hand speaker to order the car to stop in the search area thats protected by a classified device that blocks phone singals. Order everyone to get out of the car. Have them lift their shirts up and empty out their pockets. Use your optic on your weapon to scan the car from afar. Look for signs of the car being overweight, or woman being the driver etc.
In real life when we have to stop a car while moving (called Flash TCP), we would approach the car with less than 2 soldiers with SPEED. Scream at the people in the car, and pray that they dont have a bomb in the car. If the person is a sucide bomber, he/she was paid to do it, they will do it anyway no matter how nice you are to them LOL duh. If that peson has weapon and hes in his right mind he wouldnt grab it and try to hurt you because a typical infantryman is trained to fire it quicker than a normal civilian, and usually you are covered by a bunch of big weapons. FYI, most checkpoints are manned by Iraqi Security Forces.
By the way the person whos asking this question could be one of the insurgents heheh.

When they have checkpoints it should be required that they can stand behind something safe, point their guns at the occupants & have them come out towards you with their hands up. Come to you at the safe distance & search them. Then with how great technology is, have an electronic robot that can go up to the vehicle to test for bombs? :)
May God Bless & protect all our soldiers & peace officers out there trying to deter terrorists & protect civilians. We have the technology to have a space station & send shuttles up several times. You'd wish they had more technology to protect those putting their lives on the line to protect others. Remember how many of our soldiers were sent over without the protection & equipment they needed. I watch cspan & it's interesting to hear their debates & speeches. The first billions of dollars shoulda went to make sure they were properly protected with flak jackets, hum-vees armored underneath, etc. Them first, then distributed the rest of the money where else it's needed. Thanks for you Q. Happy Valentine's Day!
***Thank you for your service, Thuan, and the info you provided about how there are some of those protective securities.

It depends on the level of security.
At the lowest level, there is no gate or barrier.
At the highest level, there is no access through the gate.
(There are several levels of security in between. Some include barriers for the vehicles and numerous armed guards assisting the one who approaches your car.)

Have your gun focused on them at all times with your finger on the trigger and the selector on fire. If you see even a little bit of suspicious activity you open fire, thereby killing any risk that there might be.
