I am drilling holes in my basement floor to attach a 2x4 base plate for framing. I have tried several drill bits, and all have dulled to an unsuable point after drilling only a few holes. Are certain bits better than others? Any additional tips? I am currently using a regular drill, and would rather continue that if possible.

What i like to use in this situation is called a nail set. it is a device that uses a special type nail for the device and shoots the nail with alot of force via a 22 caliber blank bullet cartridge. it is very easy to use, very fast, and very safe. to buy a complete setup will run you about $30.00 and will shoot alot of bottom plates. besides it is the coolest tool in my shop,

I have found that Bosch Bits are hands down the best. The cut like crazy out the box and last for many holes. They are pricey. While drilling keep pulling the bit out of the hole, make sure your not heating the end up that will dull a bit real fast. Don't think you going to drill a 1/2 with a 1/2 H drill easily. You might want to run a 1/4" first then the 1/2" Lay on the drill and hammer it home that's why it's called work.

The "typical hardware store concrete drill bit, will only last a few holes. You can try to "sharpen the cutting edges with a file or grinder.

Your best bet is to go to equipment rental yard and rent a hammer drill and a industrial drill bit, These drill bits have splines and fit into the hammer drill and have more power and they last quite enough to do the job as you described it.

To drill an actual hole you need a hammer drill with a carbide bit. It's a special drill that drills and chisels a hole at the same time. They are kind of expensive to buy but many local rental places will rent you one but you have to buy the bits for them. Another option is a gunpowder charged nail gun that uses .22 caliber blanks. You could buy one from the local hardware store. Remington makes a decent one that goes for around $80.

There is a tool that you hit with a hammer and they use a gunpowder charge to drive a fastener into the concrete. They are fairly inexpensive. That is what is used alot of the time for putting up walls.

that'll work or, get concrete bits & hammer drill, & use red heads...
hammer them in your drilled hole, & they spread in the hole & bolt down your sole plate!
