I took the test in late Oct. got a letter in mid Nov. to begin the process in early Dec. and be in the academy for January.
If you are an out of towner you can let them know and they will arrange to do it all in 1 weeks time.
Once you apply for the test they will mail you a study guide and what to expect after you take the test, which is e-z.

First you have to take the written test and pass. Then you get placed on a list based on your score. If you pass the physical you are assigned an Investigator that will go over all your requirements and do a background check. Don't forget, you need at least 60 college credits. If you make it through the background check and Psychological you will be called to the Academy. The Academy is 6months long and very rough both physically and mentally (Like being in Boot Camp). You have to go through all of this for a starting salary of a little more than $25,000.00...because of the low starting salary NYPD is desparate for candidates....good luck

You have to be able to work long hours for little pay, work holidays, weekend, overnights, and kids birthdays away from the family. But you get to retire after 25 years! You can usually become a police officer anywhere from 16 weeks (academy) to 2 years for a degree.
