If I stop taking Zoloft and want to start Prozac, do I need to lessen the dosage of Zoloft slowly, or can I just stop taking Zoloft one day and start taking Prozac the next? Thanks for your help!!!

Ok thank you, any info other than ask the dr appreciated. What is a low dosage of prozac and is it really safe to just jump from one to the other, thanks!

i would check with your dr. first.some meds should be tapered off instead of switched one after the other.i use wellbutrin and it works for me.i'm not sure of your gender but my dr. started me on prozac and it had alot of side effects on me.i'm not saying that they will happen to you but the first was drowsiness.after taking it within the first hour i would feel like crap and for the next two i wouldn't remember later on having done anything except zone out and not realize anything was going on around me.this was not safe with the type of work i do.i also had trouble sleeping at night and tried taking it in the evening instead of morning but had trouble waking in the morning.the other side effect i suffered,if you want to call it that, was what i later found to be called retarded ejaculation.it was pretty much what it sounds like.i could go forever and not climax during sex.stopped using and these all went away

Taking Prozac is the best way to wean yourself off of any other SSRI, actually. Even if you don't intend to stay on Prozac afterwards. Prozac has an extremely long half-life, which means it stays in your system for about a week and gradually tapers off. Zoloft has a much shorter half-life, and if you stop taking it right away you'll most likely suffer from SSRI withdrawals, which as a former Effexor user I can tell you are about the worst thing I've ever been through. It's always a good idea to ask your doctor before changing your drug regimen anyway, but my completely unprofessional opinion is that you should be absolutely fine. Good luck. Zoloft didn't do anything good for me either.

Hello. My first question is: are you going to a psychiatrist. Is the psychiatrist who prescribed you prozac or you prescribed it yourself?....Why are you stopping zoloft?...Zoloft was not diminishing your symptoms?.
Every body is different. Every bodys response to different medicines is different. The bodys response to a medicine in different times is different. Try to find (along with your psychiatrist) which is the antidepressant that works better for you. 4 years ago I took Prozac along with a anticonvulsant med and it worked for me (diminished symptoms of depression and panic attacks). However years later when I try to take Prozac again my body/stomach rejected it. (I would vomit it). I started taking Cymbalta (new generation of antidepressant) and it has worked for me.
Your psychiatrist will tell you how to diminish a pill and then take the other. Argentox2@yahoo.com

I think you should definitely consult the doctor who prescribes your Zoloft. See if your doctor agrees that Prozac would be better. Get instructions before you consider changing anything. Consult a pharmacist if you're just curious. Consult a doctor if you want to take action.

you don't have to taper off. these new antidepressants are safe unless you take a whole bunch. you can take prozac the next day, or effexor or whatever. you might experience a headache, sleeping too much, or upset stomach.
i think prozac and zoloft work affect only serotonin. effexor and cymbalta affect more than just serotonin.

Both drugs are in the same class, serotonin re-uptake inhibitors
or SRIs You can stop one & start the other without issue.
Because dosaging is different for both you'd need a MD to assist you with the transition. Given your exchanging one for the other it should be an easy exchange.

first consult your physician. slowly get off of the zoloft, your know, wean yourself from it. Then take the prozac.
Personal experience, Zoloft is Better. Prozac tends to increase suicidal tendencies.

Call the doctors office and ask. Why go to a doctor if you are going to make these decisions on your own?

Ask a doctor.
Don't take the word for people you don't know.
