351 Clev would be a good engine to keep the horse power up and the weight down ,but if you can get your hands on one the 429 Cobra Jet was a killer engine that came stock in this car.It is 60 lbs more than the Clev. but put out more power
Clev put out 300 horses with 310 torque while the 429 was 390 horses and 375 torque that stock both have easy add on for much more power. So if your in to corners go for the Cleven or for driving straight the 429 CJ

There are alot of choices (289,302,351, Etc.) but if you are going to restore it definitely the original size that it came equipped with. This is a letter designation in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). I am a Dodge/Chrysler guy so I do not know the letter designation, but you can check with the dealer and give them the make year and model of the car, and they will tell you where the VIN tag is located, and which position the engine letter designation is in the sequence.
Also, if you go with a bigger engine, realize that it is also heavier and has a different center of gravity which means you should use heavier suspension components, and engine/transmission mounts.

Ford has a 460 engine you could stick in it. If your bore it out it can be bigger than that. It really depends on what you do to whatever V8 you have under the hood though. There are plenty of 302 engines out there that can whip a stock or mildly modified 460. Then again a properly worked 460 can crush just about anything.

for one chevy or chrysler parts wont work with ford. and your engine all depends on how much money your willing to spend on gas. muscle car engines range from 302 to 514 cubic inches. anything above a 351 is usually for race only as it is an obnoxious amount of power(seriously dangerous off closed course race tracks). i personally run a 351w and this v8 is plenty of power. she'll pull a good 200 mph on a starightaway that is with all the right parts(eg carburetor, manifold, pistons, cam, headers, etc.). my car revs real loud and attracts plenty of attention if thats what you want. heres what its got; Ford Racing 351 block bored and stroked, J&E pistons(forged iron are much tougher than cast)RB Racing cam, 750 cfm double barrelled Holley carb, Ford Racing Windsor heads, Edelbrock manifold, custom made Hedman exhaut headers, Champion racing distributor cap/spark plugs/wires, Kenne Bell ram air, custom bent 3" exhaust pipes. Now this job cost me roughly 11 000$ and the car guzzles alot of gas but the up side is 690 hp. make sure you hafve an appropriate drivetrain for it. wouldnt want to blow a measly 6 cylinder rear end off with your power. I drive an 89 lx.

Well I know they made a 429 Cobra-Jet ram-air engine for it back then, and it was HOT right from the factory! It was easily beefed up too... alot of potential!
The 1968 Mustang Cobra-Jet came with a 428 engine.

I would put a 302 Ford in it. Either fuel injected or carb set-up. The injected would allow good around town, daily driver. Plus, bolt on performance parts are everywhere and even supercharged parts.

If this was originally a Six cylinder car, you will have to change way more than the engine. All six cylinder parts are way too weak for a big engine. Drive train, brakes, frame parts, cooling etc. Better see what it had/has in it to be sure.
