"one is often told that it is a very wrong thing to attack religion, because religion makes men virtuous. So I am told; I have not noticed it... You find as you look around the world that every single bit of progress in humane feeling, every improvement in the criminal law, every step toward the diminution of war, every step toward better treatment of the colored races, or every mitigation of slavery, every moral progress that there has been in the world, has been consistently opposed by the organized churches of the world...
My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race. I can not, however, deny that it has made some contributions to civilization. It helped in early days to fix the calender, and it caused Egyptian priests to chronicle eclipses with such care that in time they became able to predict them. These two services I am prepared to acknowledge, but I do not know of any others" Bertrand Russell

We progress in spite of, not because of, religion. How much faster could we progress without the hobbles of theistic delusion!

I disagree with this statement completely. First of all, you are confusing faith with religion. Religion is a man-made interpretation and series of rituals based on a given faith system and as such will tend to abuse certain issues of human existence. Man's faith in God is not so easily distorted so long as he keeps his eyes on Him (God).

Secondly, the statement that "you find as you look... opposed by the organized religions of the world" is completely off base. After all, I ask this: If there is no God, no supreme being which we must answer to, than how do you define good and evil? If there is no God than how do you define right and wrong? These questions are important because they address the basis for his statement. Criminal law, for example is based entirely on defining what is right and what is wrong. If there is no God, there is no grounds for any determination of good or bad (morality).

I agree that many bad things have happened, untold deaths have occur ed, and misery due to the abuse of faith and religion. But I ask you this: are these the faults of God or of man? For why should we blame God for the failings of man!!

Without the influence of Jesus, His Holy Spirit, and His church, this world would be pure evil. Christianity has done many, many, many things to make this world a better place. For example, most charities and humanitarian aid is done by Christian organizations. Also, the reason that we have democracy and so much freedom in this country is because this nation was founded on Christian principles. Also, Abraham Lincoln was a Christian and he signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Christian and he was a civil rights activist. Without God, there would be no moralty, no love. Without God, we wouldn't even exist. www.equip.org

When God's judgments are executed against this world, who will survive? Who will not? The Bible shows that those who want God's rule will be protected and will survive. Those who do not want God's rule will not be protected but will be destroyed along with Satan's world.

Proverbs 2:21, 22 says: "The upright [those who submit to God's rule] are the ones that will reside in the earth, and the blameless are the ones that will be left over in it. As regards the wicked [those who do not submit to God's rule], they will be cut off from the very earth; and as for the treacherous, they will be torn away from it."

Psalm 37:10, 11 also says: "Just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more . . . But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace." Verse 29 adds: "The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it."

We should take to heart the counsel of Psalm 37:34, which states: "Hope in Jehovah and keep his way, and he will exalt you to take possession of the earth. When the wicked ones are cut off, you will see it." Verses 37 and 38 say: "Watch the blameless one and keep the upright one in sight, for the future of that man will be peaceful. But the transgressors themselves will certainly be annihilated together; the future of wicked people will indeed be cut off."

How comforting, yes, how inspiring it is to know that God really does care and that soon he will put an end to all wickedness and suffering! How thrilling it is to realize that the fulfillment of those glorious prophecies is but a short time off!

I don't believe in Religion either. I believe in God. I believe I was created. I believe God loves me and you. I believe he sent his son on the cross to die for all humans, no matter their race, color or religion. I believe that Religion is the reason most don't believe in God because they have put their own ideas into a BEING that doesn't NEED our ideas but rather our faith.

I believe the progress in this quote is delusional: Progress?

Yes we are killing unborn babies at a fabulous rate.
Yes we can now clone sheep.
Yes we can now blow ourselves and the earth up a 100 times.
Yes we can put criminals away longer and kill them if your state allows it.
Yes we can try to act moral but what progress are you talking about?

We are playing God, we are reaping what we have sown.

I do not know of "services" that religion provide but I do know what my God provides.

Keep believing in yourself and this wonderful progress we have made as humans and see what your opinion is when someone nukes a country and you say we are progressing toward what? We are at war now. There are many more to come.

God Bless.

Start praying instead of quoting someone who died of the flu.

Religion obviously doesn't make men virtuous. Religion makes men morally lazy, if anything. They are taught to follow a dictated set of rules and not ask too many questions about why they are good to follow. When you try to have a discussion about morality, they just spew off their list of rules as dictated to them by their preachers and politicians. When you try to get them to talk about why something is right or wrong, they can't talk about it past "God said so".

Bertrand Russell was a very wise man.

I disagree with most of what you say. It is your opinion and I see Churches everywhere helping people around the world. I guess we all see the world as we would like it to be. Some see goodness others see evil.

Sounds like you are trying to convince me that religion plays a part in the foundation of our Judicial and Government system and without it we would all be sinners. Or am I a sinner to question this quote?

Every bit of progress in humane feeling...has been consistently opposed by the organized churches?

Every step toward the diminution of war...has been consistently opposed by the organized churches?

Bertrand Russell is an idiot. Who says stuff like this unless they've pushed their education aside and replaced it with mindless hate?
