No, you only file one Federal return.

If both states have income taxes, you probably will have to file 2 State returns, though.

If you file 2 1040s (Federal Tax Returns), you WILL be audited. All you income from every source is reported on the same 1040. State tax returns are a different story. You would file a state return in each state you worked that has a state income tax. You would also file in your state of residence if that is not one of the states you worked in. Most states that have income taxes tax all income earned in the state or while living in the state. Credits are usually available from the state of residence for taxes paid to the state where the income was earned.

I'm in this same situation this year (again). DON'T file 2 Federal returns. As for state, it depends on your situation. If you're one of the rare people who lives near a state border, it gets tricky. You work in one state but live in another on a daily basis. But if you just moved from one state to another, file part-year returns for each state. Assuming they each have state returns of course.

I would think that you will do ONE return for federal and a seperate state return for each state. I just got done with my tax and they just ask you in the fed return to keep giving income info on that one return. . the feds are in control of all of us no matter where we live( even if my great unce dont think so)hee hee
