What exactly is the process of trading in your vehicle at a dealership? Is there anything specific i need to bring? And can i get a newer model than than the one i already have?

Bring your registration and insurance information. Bring your title if you have paid off you old car. Visit a library before hand to look up in Kelly's Blue Book how much your car should be worth, wholesale and retail. Have your car as clean as you can reasonably get it. The faster they think they can sell your car the more it will be worth.

Have some idea of what you would like to drive away in. Again get an idea of value through Kelly's. Bring along the last several pay stubs from work to show how much you make. Have a list of your debts so you will know how much car you can afford.

Remember that just because you are looking for a trade, you don't have to make it with the first dealer you meet. You might want to take along a friend, or even a parent.
