whatever you do, don't submerge the chicken in hot water, that's pretty dangerous. I wouldn't do it in the microwave. As it was stated before, you'll get cooked parts here and there, and your texture will just be garbage. the chicken won't even be worth eating. the best way to defrost anything is the fridge. take it out a day or two in advance. second to that would be under a stream of cold running water in the sink. don't let it sit in the water, as that is also unsanitary.

RE:
Defrosting a whole chicken in the microwave?
Does defrosting a whole chicken in the microwave dry it out? I have it set on auto defrost but know that microwaves dry meat out. Is this a good idea?

This is not a good idea for many reasons. Chicken is one of the most dangerous foods around. If you do not cook it thoroughly to an internal temp of at least 160 degrees it can make you sick. By microwaving the chicken you could end up having a chicken that is unevenly defrosted. Not to mention the fact that most times when you defrost you can end up cooking part of the meat too.

It might very partially cook it here and there. It's best to defrost a chicken in the fridge, or in a clean sink of water, in the wrapper, changing the COLD water every 30 minutes. I never liked defrosting anything in the microwave.

Put the chicken in the sink with cold water and let soak for a few hours. Turn chicken periodically from side to side. You're right the microwave will dry it out when you have to defrost the whole chicken.

Submerge the whole chicken in a bowl of water and then microwave it.
The water will prevent the bird from drying out or cooking. It won't affect the flavor.

Don't defrost it!
Use a pot, submerge the chicken in hot water, add lime or vinegar and cover. It should thaw out in about an hour,
Why is it dangerous to submerge a chicken in hot water....I do it all the time.

Microwave defrosting uses weaker waves to not excite water molecule too much. You should be okay.

it's a terrible idea. even on low low heat you're gonna cook the outside before the inside is even slightly thawed. it'll turn that nasty microwave brown that your meat turns when you defrost it too hot.
