I'm so sorry about your friend's death, and bless you for wanting to honor his memory.

You might think about a few things: What were your friend's interests? Did he like sports? You could have a night at the ballpark in his name, where people buy their ticket but also make a donation. Or, the art museum, or dance club, whatever he enjoyed in life. Or a potluck dinner, or wine and cheese party -- something that reflects who he was. Keep it simple and affordable so lots of people can come. Plan it at least a month in advance.

Call it "(His Name) Night" and make a flyer with his picture on it. Have a book there where people can write down their recollections about him -- you can give this to his family afterward.

Lots of luck, and thank you for being such a great friend!

possibly a dinner benefit, or maybe if you know a few good local bands, have a little concert... the bands and the venue might provide their service for free if they know it's for charity... sell tickets and have a little donation station at whatever event and give that money to the charity.
