I have used for years and HIGHLY recommend AVAST.

NO virus, trojan, etc has gotten past it as yet.......

There isn't real winner for the best free anti-virus software but your best bet is with AVG Anti-Virus. Good scanning engines and resident shield. Another is Alwil Anti-virus. Not a real good choice.
