Every year in my city a festival of alternative theatre is held. It openly solicits for volunteers. However, volunteers notoriously get "robbed" at this festival. By "robbed", I do not mean pickpocketed. They get robbed on the System, if you know what I mean. If you do not know what I mean by the usage of the term "rob", find out, for reasons of your own safety!

Young people who want more out of the System, controlled by "stonecutters", (e.g. "advancement" at university), are encouraged to volunteer there.

Almost every major event in town is put on by "stonecutters" (i.e. Freemasons and related groups).

Volunteer co-ordinators preside over a portion of this type of theft.

It's safe and honourable, depending on what the volunteer service is. They should be looking out for the volunteers and those who are being helped more than they do.

Depends on the organization and the volunteer work. I have seen good and bad, rich and poor organizations. Crooked charities never live long before the truth gets out.

I coordinate volunteer work inside canadian penitenciairies since 1999. Nobody gets robbed; they get great reward from the inmates, especially those who have lost contact with their family and don't get private visits anymore.
Group meetings, pen pals, art contest and a special charity art auction are our main activities. In 42 years of action behing the walls, no one has been injured nor insulted. We are always greeted as special visitors with all the attention that comes with it.

Volunteer work is essential to our society but everyone should double check the organization before engaging themselves. Ask for the annual/financial report to judge wether your participation is really needed and if the mission is in accord with your belief and wishes.

Volunteer work is not done for honor, it is work that is done that makes you feel good. It makes you feel like you have helped someone. I people don't notice your work,it doesn't matter as long as god and you know.
