well.... I guess you don't want to know what are rules of phorography.Besides very often in this great photos rules are broken and that what makes the photo speciall. But I think that always you need to have interesting subject.Capture it in some unusuall way. And look at the condition:light is a key. And composition make a photo effective too.

LIGHT IS EVERYTHING! Photography means, literally, written in light. Take the time to really understand light exposure, the correlation between apertures and shutterspeeds, different kind of lighting (outdoor, indoor, sun, cloudy, fluorescent & incandescent)
COMPOSITION: try learning the principles of "Rule of Thirds". This will help you have a more interesting visual design, rather than framing your subject matter in the middle.
EXPERIMENT: to break the rules, you must know the rules first. so once you learn the basics of lighting and composition, follow your instincts and develop a vision and style that is all your own!
a good website to start: www.photo.net
Having a digital camera is especially useful, that way you can practice practice practice!!
Make sure you take your images in a high resolution, so you can print your photos in a larger scale.
Frame your image, and VOILA!
good luck!

Lighting and the position of the photo are really important. If you want the photo to look vintage, I suggest a Holga Toy Camera. That has a blurry, retro effect. Color is also very important.

everyone that mentions lighting, they are sooooo right.
there is a photo of an old woman, a semi-profile shot, black and white gone slightly sepia...everytime i see it i am moved to tears, it is a very powerful picture.
it is the combination of the details, the wrinkls in the face and the expression of the eyes, the lines around the eyes and face, the way the hair is...the background is fuzzed back so all you really see is her...and the lighting highlights just the right things in the portrait.

The Photographer makes a photograph. Anyone can take a picture.A photographer makes the picture. The only difference between a amateur, and a pro. Is that you will never hear a pro say "wait until the light goes on" .No rules in photography. Just basic fundamentals. If you like it , shoot it. Shoot ,shoot, shoot , shoot

Color I don't think is very important, there are black and white photos with no color that are very effective.
Its all about LIGHT
1). LIGHT
2). Configuration (subject)
3). Values (pictures have alot opf different values)
