Most of them cannot see your hands moving. Since you use your feet to operate the pedals of the piano, that's what some will watch. It's seven more so for an organist.

I have been a musician for many years-- almost 50 years! I have performed in large arenas; in small, intimate clubs; and in churches.

All of these answers are good. The best thing about playing music on any instrument, is that you can transcend the audience! This is especially true in church where you can get so involved with worshiping the Lord that you can truly forget (or ignore) everything else around you.

The audience's attention may be on you, on your feet, on God, on the pretty girl across from them, etc. The audience's attention does not matter, as I learned playing for years in an exclusive restaurant where the band was mostly background to the food. YOUR attention to the music at hand is what matters!

people generally watch what they don't understand to learn. most people understand how the piano keys are played but few understand the pedals and what they are used for, including many pianists who will only use right pedal. You must have been using lots of pedal and more than just the sustain and they were curious. All that or perhaps there was a small animal running around under your feet and they were waiting to see if you would step on it.

I'm a singer-songwriter, and I know exactly what you're talking about.

Many times, music moves people and takes them to another place emotionally. People aren't generally comfortable making eye contact or even looking at faces when they're feeling vulnerable or enjoying something as deep and personal as music.

People also don't want to make you nervous - most of us are sensitive to people when they're up on stage. It's a scary place to be! The last thing anyone wants to do is intimidate the performer. People never look at my face- they look at my guitar or my hands. I do the same thing (unless it's a huge venue and the person is famous).

Church is somewhat intimate and you're sharing something very personal. Take it as a compliment!!

Well, when people usually see me play it is when I am marching (so people have to look at my feet (not really- but still)), but other than that I haven't noticed such a thing- just ignore those people. For serious.
