Because 3/4 of your tomatoes are imported. Also, the U.K. doesn't really offer the ideal climate for growing the best tomatoes.

This guy seems to think he has some good one, though:

Because of all the chemicals that are put on them. You can help this by making sure you do not chill them. Room temperature tomatoes always taste better. Also, smell your tomatoes before you buy them. If they do not smell like tomatoes 'used to smell' then they will probably taste of nothing. If you can afford them, vine ripened or even better organic tomatoes are normally better. Also, if you can get them from a local supplier in a farmers market or small fruit&veg shop, they are less likely to have been mass produced, force ripened and covered in chemicals. My local farmers market is no more expensive than the supermarket, but much nicer. They are one thing I would always spend the money on though. I think it is a waste of money to have something that is tasteless, so either buy less better quality tomatoes or spend the extra :-)

They taste the same in the USA as they made them so they would be consistant size and never ripen or spoil so the stores could stock them until they sell. There should be a law against genetically engineered foods like this as there are people who actually think these plastic things are tomatos.

I lived in England once, not all tomates taste like plastic. Most tomatoes in the UK are imported from Canaries or Spain. They are the same as the ones on sale there, trust me, I live in Spain!!

try removing wrapping before consuming, it might help!!!

Only if you buy them at supermarkets! and then only if you buy the cheap ones. These are from plants that produce large fruit quickly, they are harvested when unripe, and grown using Chemical Fertilisers! Most of them are imported too.
For a real British tomato buy your fruit and vegetables at the non super markets. Every town has one. The chances are you will find local grown and or organic. It's the nearest thing to tomato heaven without growing your own!

Too many of them are now grown under lastic poly tunnels and are forced. This affects the taste. Best to buy the deeper red tomatoes on the vine they always seem to taste better to me. Or get a grow bag and do some of your own.

Because they all come from Holland and are bred for their appearance and not their taste! It's our own fault, we don't have to buy them, I've given up and will not buy "Supermarket" Vegetables, (Yes I know that a tomato is a fruit) It's the Farmers Market for Me. Food like it used to taste!

They have been grown for their saleability from how they look, not how they taste. You can get better tomatoes from local greengrocers that source from local farms.

They wont look the same as each other and they might be slightly different colours, but they will certaily taste better.

Next time you go into Starburgers for a meal remember that you have to squeeze the ketchup out of the Plastic.

Dunno realy but I have noticed that there is not much taste to the delightful tomato in the UK.

Although I did get a nice batch of Organic salad tomatos from morrisons the other day.

The best advice I can offer you is , avoid the orange ones, they are usually the worst.
