My Vet wants to keep my pup over night when he is neutered. I know they like to keep the females because their spaying is more serious. But I have never heard of keeping a male. I told them I would pick my dog up the same day. I will not leave him over night. When I asked why they insist on keeping the males they said the dog just rests better and doesn't run around as they might at home. All my dog would do is cry all night...I won't leave him.

one REASON I wonder about the practice of keeping him overnight is, he will be alone. Who is there with him? Someone might check in during the night but no one stays there. They could come in and find him dead in the morning..............

I had my two males done at the same time and they both came home the same day. I have also had countless other dogs recover with me because I work with rescue and I have not had a problem. I would not ever leave my dog over night at the vet, for one reason there is usually no one there all night so your dog will just be crated and my second reason is why should I pay you to keep my dog all night when no one will watch him. So insist on taking your dog home or tell them you will go elsewhere.

You are right, most vets don't keep dogs over night for a neuter. But if this is the policy that this vet has you either need to respect that or find another vet. As far as your dog crying all night, don't kid yourself. I worked at several vet clinics. So long as the dogs don't know that there are any humans around, they are usually very quiet. It's only when they know there are humans around that they start with all the noise. Your dog will be fine and probably better off staying there. You are probably going to be more upset about it than the dog will be. Good Luck!

i just picked up our puppy today he went in yesterday for castration and we had to leave him there because my hubby is a chef and works nights.i think it was better for him and us that he had the time to chill resta nd be out of it.he is fine today came home walked around with the silly cone thing on his head had a wee and has been sleeping ever since so i hate to say but for his benefit leave him over night you'll get ver it and he wont notice that anyway.our pup was not whinning or stressed out when we picked him up..i thought our pup would bark and cry all night the vet said he is really easily pleased and such a lovely boy so hey spend that time away making sure the house is clear enough for the extra movement he /she will need for the cone thingy...just as i wrote that jack walked into a door so just be calm and make some space your pup will be fine.we didn't have to pay any extra for the overnight stay actually we didn't pay for the op either as we got him from the local shelter.find out what time you can call to get an update..

Just like alot of doctors have varying opinions on human surgeries, so do Vets.
It's not that unusual for a Vet to want to keep the pup contained to a smaller area to avoid exertion/straining/pulling on the stitches.
My dog went home the same day, but many Vets prefer to have them rest at the clinic overnight...let him rest at the Vet.
Have fun with your new puppy!!

Hmm, I agree with you that it should go home. The only reason I would even guess they'd want to keep it was if they have over booked the normal surgery day and expect to be there late doing surgeries. Or the type of anesthetic they use leaves the dog loopy after and they don't like owners seeing the pets in that condition.

If it was me I'd ask if they use gas to put the animal out for surgery or ketimine (forgot sp, been yrs). Avoid the ketimine if you can go to a different vet. Gas is much safer and effects wear off much faster after surgery.

They cant force you to keep your dog there, and a neutering isnt all that serious. None of my boys were ever kept overnight. They'll usually send them home that afternoon and tell you to watch the incision and make sure they dont go crazy when they get home.
Unless of course something happens during surgery then would he need to stay overnight. If they're going to force you to keep him overnight, I'd want to talk to another vet.

It's best for the dog. really. If you leave him overnight, then they can check his incision the following morning to make sure all is well. Also, he will probably not cry all night. I have worked in this area for years, and have never seen a frantic, upset dog crying to go home the night after surgery. It takes about 24 hours for the anesthetic to fully leave his system, and if you take him home, and turn your back for a minute, he could fall down the stairs, off your couch, or bed, vomit all over your house, etc... Plus, if he wakes up in the middle of the night & eats out all of his stitches, then what will you do? Leave him... Believe me, it bothers you more than it bothers him.

It's not so much the surgery as the anesthesia. They want to make sure that the animal comes out of it with no complications and then doesn't have a reaction. I would be really surprised if they would even let you pick up the same day b/c that is a liability for the vet.

Poor little guy! I got the same info from my vet today! But a friend of mine got to take her dog home early because the vet was afraid that the coming snow would shut down the town (as it did of course) and her little dog had a small complication that night. She told me to leave my dog there, it's just better.

Follow your vets instructions. If your pup is being fixed early in the day, ask the vet to call you if he feels your pup is able to go home when it is close to closing time.. The dogs are drugged and he will likely just sleep the night away and then the vet can give hime another once over the next morning before sending him off for home.
