St. Valentine was a 3rd century Roman priest who practiced Christianity and performed secret marriages against direct orders from Emperor Claudius II, who believed single soldiers were more likely to join his army. Legend has it that Valentine sent a friend (the jailer's daughter) a note signed "From Your Valentine" before he was executed on February 14 in 270 A.D.

Early Christians were happier with the idea of a holiday honoring the saint of romantic causes than with one recognizing a pagan festival!

During the time of the Roman Empire, marriages wre outlawed because the Emperor thought it prevented men for joining the army which was really important since there was a lot of rebellion against the empire. So this guy named Valentine married couples illegally and he was beheaded on february 14 but thats probably wrong since they used a different calendar then. Anyways, toady we celebrate the freedom to love and to be married and that a man died in the name of love.

Actually in the Roman Catholic Church (at least in the dioceses of the United States) today is the feast of Sts. Cyril and Methodious.

They stolen the holiday from the Greeks, Romans who stole it from earlier cultures. It is the day when birds mate to produce the chicks on the new year. The Christains couldn't very have a Happy Bird F**k Day now could they?

According to a video I saw, Valentin (a real person) was involved in healing the (king's daughter?) of blindness before his execution. He sent her a note just before he died. So this date was 'set aside' for it.

Just to keep you and me away from the daily stresses even if for one day. But then the jeweler, the florist, the card-producer and seller - and not forgetting couriers and posts - are also there to take out something from your pocket. And hey, nice excuse to start pampering someone who might not have encouraged you otherwise to approach.

Jewelry merchants need an excuse to peddle their wares. So do florists and greeting card companies and sex toy makers.
