I'm curious.... I heard a lot of my gf's girl friends saying that it is considered bad luck / bad omen to forge ahead a wedding plan when the father of the bride dies...Why?

I have also seen some horror movies regarding this topic where there was supposed to be a wedding but then the dad dies and they are haunted?

This probably goes back to a simpler time when brides came with a dowry (money, land, animals, etc.). Yes, fathers used to have to pay to have their daughters married off to a good husband. If the father of the bride died, then it would be unlikely that a dowry would be left behind for the daughter due to the customer that the oldest surviving son receives all inheritance. I suspect that this is the origin of this myth.

I've never once heard that nor have I seen it in any movies (which ones specifically?). Probably because they feel that a bride must have her dad in attendance and giving her away on the wedding day regardless of what their relationship is like any day of the year, otherwise her marriage will be null and void.

If that truly was the case, there would be millions (if not more) of doomed wives around the world, which there are not. Your life does/should not stop just because someone else dies. They would want you to continue on with whatever you were doing, not close yourself up in a shell mourning them and cease to live anymore.

ok her friends are idiots. If you can't plan a wedding if the bride to be's father dies then no young woman who's father has passed can't get married.

it's not about being a bad omen or bad luck, not everything is about the offspring, it is out of respect for her departed father.

It could be a bad or a good omen. Good because it could make her happy again. Bad because she might think you don't care.

It wouldn't be a bad omen...but show a bit of respect.
