There is no way to tell you will have to have an OBDII code reader hook up to the car and see what the trouble codes are before you can even begin to guess...

well i have to say. The ding that you heard is coming from the computer trying to tell you there is something going wrong, not the cause. It was probably accompanied by a flashing orange light. If this DID occur, you're engine is misfiring. The computer has detected a misfire that will cause catalyst damage. If you did not see the light flashing, or the light never came on, you're light may be burned out or removed. If in fact the engine was misfiring that will definitely cause the engine to die at an idle or at the least make it very difficult to stay running. Unfortunately all of these symptoms are going to have to be taken to someone who has a working knowledge of your vehicle. I believe your vehicle has a digital odometer, if it does, you can cycle the key on-off-on-off-on, and the instrument cluster should display a code or numerous codes depending on the problem. my guess is that you will see a P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, or a P0304 those are all cylinder misfire codes. I would recommend taking it to a dodge dealership where they know your vehicle better than anyone else. yeah it might cost a little more, but don't you think you are worth it. I mean who likes to be broke down?

Okay, first things first. Auto Zone DOES NOT do diagnostics, nor does Advance Auto, or any place that does not have a full service shop. They pull codes if you have a check engine light on, and can give you a general idea of what system the problem is in. Full diagnostic checks are not free, but are much more thorough. If the car has has never had a tune up, start there. Plugs and wires are very easy on a Neon. I do not recommend Bosch Platinum plugs. I tried them in my 95 Neon and they sucked. Go with Champion Platinum or Double Platinum, those are the factory plugs for that car. Your fuel filter is non-serviceable on that vehicle, it is part of the fuel pump assembly in the tank. If you do not regularly use any type of fuel system cleaner, I recommend getting a can of a product called Sea Foam if you can find it in your area, or some other quality brand cleaner. If the car has over 100,000 miles and has never had the O2 sensors changed , that is a likely suspect. Also, mass air flow sensors are not cheap parts for any make of vehicle, and you may have a tough time finding one in the aftermarket to fit that car. Bottom line, if you are able, take it to a mechanic you trust to have it properly checked out before you play musical parts and spend a bunch of money without fixing the problem.

It's doing it because it needs attention, something is broken. What error codes are you getting when the mechanic scans it? That would be the starting place. The check engine light goes on when there is a value returned out of specifications on any of the many things the computer keeps track of.

Maybe the 02 sensor fell out? this would produce a loud exhaust leak sound. but it should run

Get your computer scanned with an OBDII scanner and go from there.
