Yes there is...puppy food has higher amount of protein in it, which puppies need because their muscles and bones are developing, where as adult food the protein level is less, since they don't need so much of it, because too much protein can make your dog gain weight. Yes, puppy food has a different protien and fat percentage than an adult dog food. Take a look at the same brand of food and compare the adult to the puppy and you will see the difference. Senior dog food is also formulated differently.

You are right, back in the day we did not have "puppy food" and our puppies grew up just fine. If you go further back in the day, back to a few hundred or thousand years a go, there was no puppy food either, dogs all ate the same things and grew up fine. Today we have food for every stage of the dog's life and our dogs die at the age of 10-12 on the average. In the meantime, we have dogs that live on whatever they can hunt in other countries that live to be 15-20. Why is that? I feed Canidae to everyone, adults, puppies and they all do GREAT on it. Yes, it is a quality dog food and yes it gives my dogs what I want them to have. No need for puppy food here.

Yes there is a big difference, puppies need about twice the calories as adult dogs, puppy food has alot more fat and protein which puppies need to develop properly, it also has nutrients like calcium to make their bones grow strong.

Yes, puppy food provides the nutrients and ingredients to help a puppy grow strong and healthy. Adult food is specifically formulated to maintain a full grown dog who doesn't need as much protein or fat.

If you look on the dog food bags for the AAFCO statement you will see what they have tested the dog food for. For example it might say, for all lifestages of your dog. Or it might say, approved for adult dogs only, ect... Most puppy foods now have a higher protein and fat ratio in them.
