It's a tradition that was brought over from England where cakes are made entirely differently than here. The cakes they make there are able to hold up for over a year. In fact, they didn't eat their wedding cake on the first anniversary as it was saved for the first baby's christening, whenever that occurred. Cakes made here in the US honestly do not stand up that long. They go bad long before then. Most people who do eat the cake on the first anniversary, spit it out because it is so bad (I have even heard of people getting food poisoning from it) and then go out to eat somewhere where they get a fresh cake.
Alot (obviously not all) of bakers are wisening up to the fact that cakes made in this country don't last that long so they offer a free top tier replica on the first anniversary instead. But you still have caterers and such who save the top tier for you when serving the rest (even when you tell them you are not saving it) because they are stuck in the archaic traditional mindset that has not evolved with the times.

It's true. And the cake is never the same. There are a few bakers out there that are nice enough to offer a free first anniversary cake if you get your wedding cake with them, though.

It is simply another way for women to torture men and shorten their lives, only this one involves eating crummy freezer burned cake Instead of interrupting during the game, wanting to talk about wall paper at 6 in the morning, spending saturdays looking at moldy antiques or watching sappy movies to cry.
