Border Collies are very high energy dogs that require being challenged mentally. They love to herd and will do that to your daughter. I am not talking about the nipping at heals, like they do to animals, but the dog will make her go where it wants her to be.
Overall, they are great dogs for children. They are just in need of a lot of exercise and challenges. They love to figure out how to get out of collars and off leashes and escaping the yard. If you have the time to dedicate, this will be a really good dog for your 19 month old.

Border collies are incredibly protective of children. My border collie would growl at me when I disciplined my son, and would sleep in the doorway to his room, standing guard. Later, the dog would get out of the yard and wait at the bus stop when my son got out of school. Border collies are wonderful dogs and family members!

I've seen them be incredibly protective, they want to round the little kiddies up to make sure they are safe.
These dogs take this job serious.
