In a NORMAL year, the IRS accepts e-filed returns within minutes. If the return is accepted by Thursday of any week, the refund is issued on Friday of the following week. This is not a normal year. Congress passed several last minute changes to the tax laws. When the IRS attempted to update their computers to reflect these changes, several 'glitches' were created. These 'glitches' have delayed thousands (millions) of refunds.

With efile the IRS gets and acknowledges your return that same day. Depending on whether or not you go through an outside agency ie H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt, will determine when you get your refund, those agencies deal with an outside bank where if you efile you can recieve your refund the next day.
