A gospel is any written telling of the story of the life of JEsus Christ, There a ton of different ones, but the official ones are MAtthew MArk Luke And john. Theres alos Barabbas, MAry, James, Philip, Truth, and many others. Barabbas has a sort of Islamic twist to it yet it was written before Muhamad and even John.

Some new religions use the name Gospel to help promote there holy books, like the Gospel of the Flying Spagetti Monster in Pastafarianism, and yes that does exist.

Gospel, literally translated, means "good news" deriving from the Old English "god-spell" translated from Greek ευαγγέλιον (euangelion) used in the New Testament (see "Etymology" below).

In Christianity, the term "gospel" can be used to mean different things, including:

* to denote the proclamation of God's saving activity in Jesus of Nazareth, or to denote the agape message proclaimed by Jesus of Nazareth: this is the original New Testament usage (for example Mark 1:14-15 or 1 Corinthians 15:1-9; see also Strong's G2098);

* more popularly, the four canonical Gospels, which are attributed to the Four Evangelists: (Gospel of Matthew, Gospel of Mark, Gospel of Luke and Gospel of John): the term "a reading from the Gospel" can refer to any of the 4 books;

* other non-canonical works of antiquity that purport to quote Jesus (e.g., Gospel of Thomas);

* a genre of Early Christian literature (cf. Peter Stuhlmacher, ed., Das Evangelium und die Evangelien, Tübingen 1983, also in English: The Gospel and the Gospels).

The expression "gospel" was used by Paul, probably before the literary Gospels of the New Testament canon had been produced, when he reminded the people of the church at Corinth "of the gospel I preached to you" (1 Corinthians 15.1) through which, Paul averred, they were being saved, and he characterized it in the simplest terms, emphasizing Christ's appearances after the Resurrection (15.3 – 8):

A "gospel" is a proclamation. You can write a gospel about a football team that you truly believe will win the Super Bowl and it will have the same truths as any other gospel.

ooo I actually just did a study on that the gospel means the good news Matthew Mark Luke and John all give accounts on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Luke actually sort of gives a sequal with the book of Acts (although Acts is not on one the Gospels) Basically theres one Gospel but different depictions of it in each book.

Gospel of Jesus Christ--the Truth!
His death and resurrection and why He died on the cross and rose again...to save sinners, those who believe in Him and what He did are set free, justified by His blood. He was the one sacrifice for sins. And you must confess with your mouth and repent of sin--believe He is Lord, and you will be saved.
2 Corinthians 11:4
For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

Galatians 1:6
[ No Other Gospel ] I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—

Galatians 1:8
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!

Ephesians 3:6
This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Gospel is a word derived from the Anglo-Saxon language. Basically it means "Good News." It has come to mean "truth" in certain circumstances, as in, "I'm telling the truth. It's gospel. I didn't see anybody."

It has a very strong religious connotation as well, since it refers to the 4 Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John who are purported to have chronicled the life of Christ, and whose works have been included in the Bible.

It was originally God Spell and it had to do with magic and stuff. They shorted it in 295AD to Godspel and shortened it again to Gospel in 325AD. It originally contained the spells that Jesus did to turn water into wine and make the loaves and bread multiply, but due to the magician's code the Vatican took that stuff out.
