I agree to a point, the first part of your statement in that people who are afraid to go to hell are generally religious. However, having said that, based on your definition of "hell", Religious people are not afraid to go to hell because of it being a generic negative place as you put it, but moreso because of how they interpret or envisage hell to be in the christian sense of the word. A matter of fact religious people expect negativity in their lives and and they see this earth as it exists now a negative place. They strongly believe that the strife or "hell" that they have to put up with is for a purpose and that is to make them stronger and better people. Their feeling is that they are expected to go through "hell" to avoid going into Hell....I trust that you get my drift!
Spirituality on the other hand, in itself IS religious. However, it tends to be more personal and private as compared to Religion. The lines between one and the other are not clear and distinct. I do agree that people may become spiritual because of experiencing a lot of negativity in their lives....as you say "being in hell, a generic negative place". However, the same applies to Religion. A lot have turned to Religion after they have been in or through "hell" To me...there is not much difference in the two except that Spirituality is more personal than Religion.
Just my two cents!...

I like this statement because some people cling to a religion without putting much thought into it, they claim it but don't really incorporate it into their lives. And I agree, true and mindful spirituality is often discovered through difficult experiences or intense pursuits. To a spiritual person, religion is often incorporated into their spirituality, but on a more meaningful basis, it becomes a part of who they are, they find the real meaning of religion and spirituality. What I don't like about it is that it fuels the fire for some who think that anyone who claims a religion must not be a "real thinker" or a person with real and practical experiences. But I don't think that is the meaning of this statement, because in that same manner, people often cling to other forms of spirituality, or atheism, without any real thought or understanding put into that viewpoint either.

disagree, many religions don't have a version of hell, and their main goal is not to keep themselves from hell, but rather get themselves closer to a place they believe is higher.
spirituality is more of a connection to something that is beyond you, be that a god or other being.

That is what kept me going back to AA as they did not tell me I had to believe in God, it was God as I understand him. I moved into the bible belt from an area with quality AA meetings. I cannot stand to hear bible thumpers quoting scripture and the words Our Lord Jesus Christ, blah, blah, blah. I can understand why the meetings are small when they talk this garbage.

I've been through "hell" and I'm not spiritual or religious. I'm just trying to get this life over with.

I agree.
But I am a Christain and am not afraid to die at all. I have been to Heaven and I have been to Hell. But Christianity is a calling not a religion. You cannot say I did not want to be born, but you can wish to die. You are born into the kingdom of God, not wish your way into it. If you have never died you can never be born again.
If you have not been born again your just kidding yourself like Adam and Eve were naked in the Garden, afraid to meet God because they did know they were wrong, Adam did have a religion there and he was afraid just like you will be some day when you met God. And fig leaves did not stop his feeling shame.Genesis 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
But yet this same Adam did teach his children a lie also because this is what Cain brought as an offering to God and God did not accept this; Genesis 4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
Cain was a good religious man just doing what daddy and mommy taught him was right and yet God did reject his offering; Genesis 4:5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
Now Cain is the first son in the Bible and yet the first one that feared God because he was the first one to receive the Mark of the Beast; Genesis 4:15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
So yes you are exactly right all the religious people will be passing out a mark to buy or sell and they are afraid of Hell; Revelation 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Revelation 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Disagree, Pure Religion is taking care of widows and orphans. I have been saved and have no fear of going to hell, my life was hell until I got saved.

Well, I have had no fear of Hell since becoming a Christian, that much is true, though I would say your question is grossly oversimplified.
