I'm babysitting a dog, and his owners said that he had an infection. He has a lot of earwax, shakes his head a lot, and i dont know what to do. His owners are out of reach for a while. Can i give him regular drops? Should i do nothing?

Go to a vet clinic there is a ear treatment in a bottle , they will tell you how to use it.

If the dog has an ear infection the "wax" would look dark brown/black in color and will be very pasty. Dogs who have floppy ears are prone to them. Also whens the last time the dog had a bath? If it was about two weeks ago, water could have gotten into the dogs ears and that too also forms the dark brown pasty wax that can resemble an infection. All in all the only way to find out is to take him to a vet. If it has a fowl oder, and it seems to be bothering the dog in the mean time go to your local petstore and grab some ear whipes and clean his ears out a few times a day. good luck!

When the owners said that he had an ear infection, did they also say that had medication for it or leave instructions? If not, call their vet & find out what meds to give the dog.

As for getting a Qtip in there-speak to the vet first.

He probably should go to a vet. If the wax isn't too bad you could probably try wiping his ears, but it's a better idea to get him to a vet (or wait for them to take him) so you don't risk pushing the wax into his ears. Is is a Spaniel? They can get yeast infections in their ears and that is definitely vet worthy. I wouldn't try using any human meds on him because they can be deadly to animals.

do not use a q tip. if the dog moves his head he can hurt himself. get some gloves if this grosses you out. and use some toilet paper with a bit of human eardrops on it to clean it. my dog had ear problems and when i talked to my vet he suggested to do this and if the problem persists then to come in. how long are the owners gone for? if they are gone for a few days then do this any longer and i would definitely call their vet.

there is the most FOUL smell if there is an infection..if the dog will let you, use a q.tip, the vet said this was ok as we can NOT get it in too deep as their ears are different than ours.

as for anything else unless they are going to be gone for weeks I would NOT do much more for the dog.......ie you take it to the vet then you pay the vet.............

regards

what you do is you get a q-tip and gently clean out the ear if you know he does not have an ear infection but if he does leave them alone and go to a vet for help.

If they have a prescription from the vet then yes but you can also get a Qtip and very carefully clean them... if not just leave it alone...
