he has an ear infection, with a sweet smell its more than likely an yeast infection than bacterial infection, the vet should be able to give you some drops for either one of them

You can clean it out with pure Olive Oil and cotton wool, With care, You can get a cleaning liquid from the vet to use once a week, This will stop it coming back, As Im sure it will, It wont matter if the dog has long or short ears, if they get it it must be looked at once a week , if left the eardrum can be harmed. This sounds like a classic case of 'canker' it's a very common condition and easily treated so don't panic. The vet will give you drops. You'll notice that a brown wax will come out of the doggies ears after you apply it so be prepared with a cloth. It will clear up in no time.

It's likely an infection and your vet can give you meds to treat it. It's not expesive, and failing to treat it can be very bad.
