It makes a step, then a leap in the opposite direction, so it can be resolved in the right way. For instance: 3 -(step)- 4 -(leap)- 2, instead of just 3 - 2, or, in the opposite: 3 -(step)- 2 -(leap)- 4, instead of 3 - 4. The leap must be in the opposite direction so that the melody flow can come to a logical tone, while the tone that you step to is more of an ornamental one.

Either way. As long as it's a step then a leap in the opposite direction.

A skip then step in the opposite direction is an appogiatura (sp?)
