Meanwhile I altered them foulishly( I wrote notices in pen on them). Shall I find copies for these papers even if it's pretty hard to find them in publications? Why he didn't ask them back? Shall I offer voluntarily to give him back quality copies?

How could you did you want to alter information without a second opinion your *** is grass. offer him the quality copies if your smart you say as an edition but I forgot to backup. (a Small lie tihee) he could scold you doing a bad job.

If he didn't ask for them back then he only gave you copies. He has others and does not need the ones he gave you.

Was there any mention of "borrowing", "returning", or "lending?"

If you have no reason to believe s/he will want them back then don't worry about it. Just keep them.
