Writings indicate that every generation since circa the year 30 CE has expected Jesus' imminent return. Here are some examples:

How does reading 20 centuries of failed expectations effect the expectations of this promise being fulfilled at any time, ever?

I dunno about that.

But I do know that God does not have to do something for the sake of meeting expectations.

He might as well have chosen not to.

The point is...do good and mind your own business.

And youll be fine. Because no body can tell you the future for sure.

But everyone can tell you, youre gonna die someday. And so will your sun and planet and everything around u.

I thought Bishop Usher calculated Genesis as happening in 4004 BC. Where did you get 4990 for the flood? (I'm just curious. I really think the earth is much older than that.) People have been interpreting scriptures to predict the end of the earth for literally thousands of years. As the year 1000 approached, many Europeans believed the apocalypse would start at the millennium. Since then (even before then probably) people have been coming up with theories. None so far has been true. Did Noah and the animals really stay 7 thousand years in the ark before the flood? No, they stayed 7 days. (Imagine the smell! I bet they were happy to see the rains come!) But sometimes a 'day' in the Bible is just a day!

This is the easiest question tonight.
Yep, since forever people have been looking for the Messiah to return, thats true.
Problem is, all the prophecies must be fulfilled before He comes. The Tribe of Judah returned to the Country of Israel on May 15, 1947 - that kicked off the Generation of the Fig tree, which Christ says is the final generation.
That would be now.

That's because man is trying to predict what God is going to do and put their timetable on Jesus' return. God has not revealed to any man when Jesus would return, so those failed predictions are just an indication of man's level of wisdom and some smart men made bad predictions because even the smartest man can't compare to God's infinite wisdom.

Is this question continually asked because there is a refusal to accept an answer?

There is a course of action necessary that we are not capable of understanding. Especially when we can't agree on the action. And all the failed expectations have helped create the state we are in, which is explained in the scriptures we have been given to understand the course of action.

God has His own timing. He laid out events that must happen before His return. One of the last things to happen was that the Jewish people would return to their homeland. 1947 Israel was recreated. Also, the Gospel had to be preached in all the world. That has now been done. Christ's return had to be seen by everyone in the world. Today, with satellite TV, that's possible. There is nothing anymore preventing the return of Christ

2 Peter 3:3
Know this first of all, that in the last days MOCKERS will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation."
2 Peter 3:8
But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

VERSE 8 is not an equation but tells us simply that time to God is a lot different then it is to us.

Jesus said that the day wouldn't happen until the Word of God was published & preached to all nations, then look up.

This is Gods Grace. Everyone who is left behind (after the Good News is presented to them correctly) who do not take the mark will be beheaded. They will also be part of the 1st Resurrection. But God is going to have the day of His Wrath on those who destroy Gods creation and murder Gods People and Prophets. But everyone will have heard the Gospel Truth of Jesus and given a chance to repent & turn to Christ, before the wrath of God is poured out.

It is written no one knows the day & hour, only the Father in heaven. So, it is too complicated to explain to us in our humanity. I think it is on the condition of the Word being preached/ published to all nations.

Others have predicted saying, "The LORD God has revealed to me Jesus is returning on such & such a day!". That goes against what Jesus said. If Jesus isn't going to tell us, then today another isn't going to tell us. Joseph said this & he was wrong. Ellen White (7thDA) said this & she was wrong. A Pastor at my husbands church (growing up) said he had a dream and Jesus was coming back on such & such a day, & he was wrong.

Anyone who has read the Word of God would have discernment these people were wrong. And they never got that information from the LORD God.

Because like Jesus said, if those who reject the Lord knew he was coming they would prepare themselves for His arrival.

Matthew 24
42"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

for one thing jesus said he would return " like a thief in the night" at an hour or season we do not expect. secondly, perhaps he has not returned because he is giving people time to turn to him because he is not willing that any should be destroyed.
