You can, of course, call a countertop installation company they repair those thing but charge a lot. A burn as you describe will run you about $75.
However, you can do a pretty good patch job yourself. Clean out the area with wet/dry sandpaper of 600 grit using it wetted. Then take a tube of polyurethane glue and squeeze out an inch or so long bead of it onto a mixing board surface. Then mix a colorant into the polyurethane glue as close as possible to the laminate color. (You dont need it perfect first application. You will get really good on color match as time goes by) Apply the mix to the burn damage thinly and let cure then sand a bit with the 600 grit wet/dry paper. Repeat application of this mix about 5 times , always working on improving the color match, and sanding inbetween . You will cover that spot so its barely visible for next to $5 total cost and it will be as smooth as can be.
Buy poly adhesive in tube for caulk gun at Lowes. $3.45 tube
Buy the colorant at Lowes for $1.79
I just finished patching my counter in utility room and it is nearly invisible and its first time I even tried something like this.

pot burn..nasty things and never able to really "cover it up"
try this first...clean spot with just plain water and rag..then get out your toothpaste..yeah toothpaste...and cover the burn really well...let it sit overnite...clean the next morning...toothpaste should help it some...
and granite, dont think about it...stuff is a B to keep up..i know, do it for a living..LOL...okay not knocking granite people so dont send nasty emails
you will never get the entire burn off your counter top, so i would suggest a nice cutting board...they have them at W....i have two that are very deco and look great and keep my counter knife and burn free...so just play with the area..you will be surprised, but not suggesting a wooden ones, hate those things..these are the type that doesnt break...good luck

Any Appliance, like a can-opener or toaster
Ceramic bowl that holds large utenils or your wooden spoons
Bowl of fake fruit
Spoon rest

Would a cutting board work? I've seen some lovely wooden ones that are used as decorative pieces in addition to being cutting boards.
Or maybe a fancy serving tray, either with things on it (sugar bowl, napkin holder, etc) or empty?

Put a basket of fruit on top of it. It won't look weird but decorative and if your hungry theres always the fruit!
You could also put flowers on top of it (fake ones so it lasts longer and you wont have to buy new ones every now and then)
or tape like the house rules on the table like the decorative kinds that are reallly pretty and stuff.

I too love granite but cannot afford it. So I have 2 granite cutting boards. Most granite shops sell them really cheap, they make them from left over granite installations. They give the kitchen a pop of class, they are stable becuase of the weight and clean up really well.

one of those glass cutting boards, in a hootie ring ( plumbing term for stainless ring used for flush mounted sinks ) you can cut & put hot stuff there too - get with a formica installer - just like the crinkled glass cutting boards!

How about a book holder, holding a recipe book open to one of your favorite recipes? You can change the book to match the seasons or holidays, and it could be useful!
