There are two ways drugs can be injected; intravenous and intramuscular. Intravenous goes straight into the blood stream giving almost instantaneous effect whereas intramuscular has a more subdued effect as it is absorbed into the blood stream through the muscle tissue. Most inoculations are intramuscular as well as pre-operation sedatives.

Depends on the medications,Injectable meds require different injection sites, and different types of tissue sites. Some require a deep muscle IM like most antibiotics, and oily preparations like Valium, require deep muscle, like gluteal muscles.Insulin and heparin require Subq or subcutaneous fat for proper absorption. Many IM meds are mixed with a numbing agent like 1% xylocaine to minimize pain of the antibiotics, and the deep muscle like the gluteal are the right tissue mass to allow a less painful injection. That site is the best place to allow deep IM injections, less chance of nerve damage, other places where you can give a shot IM is the deltoid (shoulder) and upper thigh.Take care. SW RNP

Because that is full of good muscle to use for IM injections. The thighs and deltoid (upper arm) muscles are also good sites for IM injections.

Yes Desiree J, very accurate....the most common site for intermuscular injections is in the posterior as their are no nerve fibres which can be easily damaged.

In the muscle. It's the biggest muscle on the human body. You don't give it in the middle of the butt....more toward the upper-near the hip.
