How come some at-home tanning products turn a nice Brown, and others go Orange?

You have the right answer, just turn it around. The chemicals in the tanning products may not be to your bodies chemistry. Alwatys try in an unconspicous area first. And of course, yes. There are different chemicals in the solutions that vary by manufacturer. Your better off using a tanning bed than using these oompa loompa products.

use johnson's holiday skin body lotion if you want a great tan, it's a moisturiser combined with very little tanning lotion. just use that everyday as your moisturiser and it gradually builds a light tan even if you have the fairest skin. Other tanning lotions however will turn you yellow if you put too much on, you need very little.
