We are interested in in American or Italian cuisine and in some good but relatively affordable priced places.

Il Buco on Bond off Lafayette - wonderful food; the Wine Cellar is available for private parties. They claim that this cellar was Edgar Allen Poe's inspiration for his story "The Cask of Amontillado"

If you would consider a French restaurant, Le Madeleine on 43rd and Ninth Avenue has an enclosed garden. The food is good and you get a lot of value for your money. They generally have a live guitarist playing and taking requests.

You didn't mention what part of the city your rehearsal is going to be in and it would be hard to suggest a place because it could wind up being far from where you're going to be and I doubt you want to drag your wedding party a distance when they'll likely be hungry after the rehearsal.

Menupages lists a number of restaurants in Manhattan and Brooklyn and you can sort them by area, type of cuisine, price range and user rating.

I'm fairly partial to Angel's on the east side. It's intimate, the food is very good and it's moderately priced. Don't confuse their take out reviews with the restaurant reviews. Their take out business is completely separate from the restaurant.

You might want to look into a place that does family-style service (i.e., big platters of food to share), like Carmine's. I see on their website (http://www.carminesnyc.com) that they have a private dining room for up to 200 at their 44th St. location. Their UWS location has a smaller room for up to 40.
