"A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death."

I agree. We should do good deeds just because they are good. Righteousness is its own reward. Its childish to do things or not do things because you "might get a cookie or might get spanked".

It would be easy for Einstein to say that he does not need religion, but he has a lot of what people look for in a religion by virtue of being a Jew. He doesn't need to be a believer and he still gets a good amount of guidance from a tight-knit culture (what he calls social ties). For Gentiles it is not that easy. They do not have the same continuity of culture and they need guidance. Religion delivers 3 square meals a day from the cafeteria line. For people who have no food or do not know how to cook, it is a pretty good deal.

yes i agree, there is no religios bias required. however in my life after sympathy ran out, education completed and social ties left me, God was the only one left i could turn to.

100% AMEN - the weird mechanism where people believe to gain reward or avoid punishment is incredibly self-centered.

Absolutely. People are so busy worried about the afterlife, they are missing out on their real life -- probably the only one they have.

Einstien was a very wise man, he was rumored to believe in SPinoza's God, and Spinoza was a Pantheist.
