My little girl seems much more advanced than all of her friends, even though deep down im proud I would never say it 2 my friends, its just her speech is way ahead, I know 5 yr olds that dont speak as well as her. How can I really tell, is there some kind of intelligent test I can do with her, or what should she be doing at this age, thankyou

My daughter is three and also has advanced speech, I think its because of how I talk to her! I never did the whole "baby talk" thing and I don't use undermining describtions of stuff! Alot of her friends don't speak as well, but I think its because thier parents use baby talk or "dimb it down" when explaining something!

You can have her take an IQ test. It's effective on anyone under 16 years old. If she scores between 80 and 120, she's average. 120 to 140 is borderline genius, and over 140 is genius. The original purpose of the IQ test was to figure out if and where to place children in school.

Just a word of caution, her IQ may be really high, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you should put her ahead in school. If she gets along better with kids older than her, then, by all means, go ahead. But part of the purpose of school is to learn social skills. If she's really behind in that category, she would be better off with her own age group.

I'm sure she's a bright and wonderful child. Her speech is a reflection of the way you talk to her. I teach kindergarten and verbal children generally come from parents who speak to their kids - many don't!. There is a difference between repeating things and understanding them. So she can sing the ABC's - can she identify them out of order? As a mom of gifted kids - find a balance between pushing and challenging. Chill and let her be 3 with all the imaginative play and silliness that comes with it. She will excell in school if she is bright - don't suck the joy out of her curiosity.

There is a huge range in the age that children get speech. Some start before they are 1, some not until they are over 4. Sounds like your little girl got it early - good for her. You could try now to start on reading & writing. She understands language, now she can comperhend that words on the page relate to spoken words and she can work on her hand eye coordination to start forming letters. Good luck.

I'm not aware of any regularly offered tests that you can get at a psychiatrist's office, and I really don't think that there's an accurate way to measure something like that. But children do learn language at different rates (I'm sorry, I don't know the range right off the top of my head).

Kids develope at different rates. If you took off your rose coloured glasses you would probably see that there is things that other kids can do that she can't.
