Sometimes it is the only source of water. As snow falls through the air it cleans the air. Therefore it contains dirt. There really is no place today that does not have pollution. It comes in from other places. We did air pollution studies near my school and although there were areas of greater pollution, all areas had some.
It is not all that bad to drink it. We used to use it to put hot maple syrup on it as we made the syrup.

Unfortunately there is so much pollution in our air and the clouds that the snow fell from could have picked pollution up somewhere else to be on the safe side you should not drink melted snow. You also need to consider bacteria from the ground it fell on, run off from another bacteria or pollution source.

I think there is pollution pretty much everywhere these days. Maybe some areas may not have as much, but I would caution you against ingesting anything that isn't properly filtered.

Just make sure it isn't yellow!

You should be fine. Just make sure it's not coming from near a road because those ice-melting chemicals are nasty.
